Week 22

HER PERSPECTIVE

Best Moment: While shopping for flowers and herbs on Sunday, the store owner asked when I’m due! It was gutsy, but I was flattered. Perhaps the bump finally looks more like a baby and less like a liter of beer!

Symptoms: I caught an awful cold this week. I blame it on our recent road trips, late nights with best friends, and lack of home cooking. Nobody likes to be sick, but being pregnant and sick adds an entirely different level of discontent. Although my nurse suggested I take Tylenol Cold or Sudafed or Robitussin, I decided I wanted to play it safe and avoid all medications. And so I gargled salt water, used a neti pot, took hot showers, ran the humidifier, coated my chest in vapor rub, drank hot tea, sucked on cough drops, and went through several boxes of Kleenex. It took a solid eight days to kick it.

Cravings/Aversions: Not much of an appetite this week due to that nasty cold. But Nick did bring me a bowl of chili from our favorite pub. And I may have eaten ice cream every day.

What I Miss: The ability to breathe through my nose.

What I Can’t Wait For: To sleep through the night without having to blow my nose. Although, of course, I’ll still be getting up to use the bathroom.

Milestones: Apparently Peanut has now developed a sense of movement and can feel my sways and shimmies and shakes. So, Peanut, I apologize for all of the coughing and sneezing this week! But I do hope you enjoyed beating Daddy and Auntie Laura at Dance Central. As for size, Peanut is now as big as a large mango and is expected to double in size over the next month. Sounds like we may soon have a baby basketball!

HIS PERSPECTIVE

Best Moment: For the record, I was champion of the “Rump Shaker” song in Dance Central… Luckily for Emmie and Laura, the game didn’t have the Napolean Dynamite dance to Jamiroquai’s “Canned Heat.”

Symptoms: It has come to my attention, thanks to Uncle Jeff, that my symptoms (gray hair, weight gain, excessive gas, etc.) during this pregnancy are the result of an accelerated aging process that occurs with parenthood — a process which is exacerbated as Peanut gets older and into more trouble. If this trend continues, here’s a projection of what I will look like in 10 years:

Milestones: Our little Culinary Kid has formed taste buds! I hope he/she isn’t a picky eater. Anybody out there have any good baby food recipes?

  1. UGH I had a terrible cold TWICE during my pregnancy and I too refused to take any sort of medication. I even avoided rubs and cough drops (I’m very paranoid and untrusting lol) It was horrible. I think one of them lasted almost a full month. I hope you get 100% better asap and enjoy the beautiful weather

  2. Ah, Nick you’ve significantly under estimated the time it takes to reach such a level of distinction. My 1st born, who has now reached the size of a well staked Heirloom Tomato plant and is developing her sense of independence (although not financially), will be turning 21 in a few weeks. I see I’m going to have to spend a little more time giving you advice so that you don’t make too many of these mistakes.
