Week 14

HER PERSPECTIVE

Best Moment: I almost have a legitimate baby bump! It’s still not obvious enough that strangers notice — and, probably, most of my friends don’t notice yet, either — but I swear it’s there. I’ve only gained about 4 lbs so far, but now that I’m in the second trimester, I’m supposed to gain an average of a pound a week. That little bump will be the size of a beach ball in no time!

Peanut received another package this week — this time from London! Uncle Andrew sent a Mr. Potato Head and a Mrs. Potato Head with this note: “Since you’re waiting to find out if Peanut will be a boy or a girl, I thought it would be fun to have some toys to play with in the meantime. Before you know it, Peanut will be the size of a potato!”

Symptoms: Earlier this week, I told Nick that my tailbone was aching. Sounds strange, right? But after Googling it (because I Google everything these days), I discovered that it is a possible symptom associated with pregnancy. Apparently, it means that my pelvic bone is shifting and is causing stress on my tailbone. It’s most noticeable after sitting in my office desk chair for a significant amount of time, so I make sure to get up and move around every hour or so. I’ve also been doing yoga stretches every evening, and my sweet husband gives great lower back massages.

Cravings/Aversions: Swedish fish. I couldn’t resist buying a bag at the grocery store this week, and it was gone within days.

What I Miss: Coffee. I cut out coffee from my morning routine many months ago, but I still miss it sometimes. On Saturday night, we had dinner with family, and several of them ordered coffee at the end of the meal. Oh, the strong, bitter aroma of freshly brewed coffee. It wasn’t the pints of beer that bothered me that night; instead it was the tall glass coffee mug that I couldn’t get off my mind.

What I Can’t Wait For: My Gap order arrived on Friday afternoon, and I love everything but the jeans — which is what I was most looking forward to receiving. I’ve had a fairly difficult time finding maternity jeans that I like. They’re either too short or too baggy, or the elastic band is uncomfortable. I returned the Gap jeans for a different size and am crossing my fingers that this pair will be it!

Milestones: Peanut is growing by leaps and bounds and is moving almost constantly in the womb (though I won’t feel it for several more weeks). Hair is growing on the head, and the eyebrows are filling in. I wonder if Peanut will have curly locks like Daddy?

HIS PERSPECTIVE

Best Moment: Got in two good runs on the Rails to Trails path this week. It felt so good to get some fresh air and exercise outside. I can’t wait for spring!

Symptoms: Sooo sore from those two runs.

Cravings/Aversions: I wasn’t craving Swedish fish, but I certainly did my part in finishing off the bag that Emily brought home.

What I Miss: My running partner, Emily.

What I Can’t Wait For: My turn for a back rub. But I won’t hold my breath for it.

Milestones: Be careful what you wish for Emily, are you sure you want Peanut to have curly locks like this … ? (And yes, those are the same red-checkered Umbro shorts I’ve been sporting since eighth grade.)

  1. Emily,
Do you have an excercise ball? My sister, who owns a Pilates studio, uses here excercise ball instead of a desk chair. She has had back problems and back surgery and she said sitting on the ball it is more comfortable than her desk chair. It also forces you to use good posture in order to keep yourself balanced. It might not work for the sitting the entire day, but it may help to try it periodically. I’m not sure if it will help you, but it may be worth a try. Just an aside, my sister had a client who took private pilates classes which modified for until the week before she delivered…I was amazed.

    1. I hear exercise balls can be helpful with lower back pain — I might have to get one for my office. Also, I have a prenatal yoga DVD, which I love. I wish I could find a local class to take, though. Not only would it be good exercise, but it would be a great way to meet other mamas-to-be, too!

  2. You are too cute! And I miss the Rails to Trails in Williamsburg! We have a similar trail here, but the cyclists on it are completely nuts, to the point that I won’t run alone and I won’t take my dog there.

  3. Hi Emily! You don’t know me, but I love checking in on your blog for yummy recipes! And congrats on baby!! You look great. Maternity jeans? I had a couple pairs of Citizen of Humanity, and Gaps skinny prego jeans are cute too. You always want to go a size down in their maternity stuff though. It runs huge! Good luck 🙂
