Thank You and a Giveaway

Welcome, friends! Thanks for sticking with me while I worked through the technical challenges of merging Wiley Wifey and The Culinary Couple. And, if you’re visiting for the first time, you can catch up under Meet the Culinary Couple.

To show my appreciation for your continued support, I’m excited to announce our very first giveaway!

Let me give you a hint. What takes 2,500 sheets of paper, 20 ink cartridges, eight sets of hands, and ten days to complete? Can you guess?

Our wedding favors!

In honor of our newly renovated blog home, we’re giving away two copies of Family Cooking: The Ultimate Marriage of Flavors.

The book includes nearly 60 recipes organized into the following categories: Hers (my family favorites), His (Nick’s family favorites), and Ours (recipes we’ve made together). You’ll find Dad’s Fluffy French Toast, Uncle Lloyd’s Potato Salad, Megan’s Linguine Carbonara, Our Pumpkin Pasta, Aunt Jane’s Apple Dumplings, and Grandma’s Peanut Butter Fudge.

Food tastes better when it’s shared with family and friends, don’t you agree? Whether we’re gathering around the dining room table or congregating in the kitchen, our fondest memories have been made between sips and bites.

To Enter: Leave a comment below with your favorite family recipe. What makes you nostalgic for home? The contest will close at 8PM EST on Sunday, July 10.

We’ll select the winners using a random number generator when we return from our Canadian road trip. So you have plenty of time to enter!

  1. How cute are you guys?! Hopefully the merger is a smooth one!

My favorite memory from back home is homemade donuts my mom would make on snow days. They were the best!

  2. Our favorite – emphasis on favorite!

    Black Bean Salsa

    Ingredients:

1 15 ounce can black beans, drained & rinsed slightly

1 ½ cups cooked corn kernels

2 medium tomatoes cut into ¼ inch dice (I usually take out the gooey stuff)

1 red bell pepper, cut into ¼ inch dice

1 green bell pepper, cut into ¼ inch dice

1 orange bell pepper, cut into ¼ inch dice

½ cup finely diced red onion

1 to 2 fresh jalapeno peppers, diced finely, seeds & all

1/3 cup fresh lime juice (usually use a little bit extra)

1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil

    1/3 cup fresh cilantro

  3. Spicy crabs make me nostalgic for home. My mum’s recipe is as follows:

-3 flower crabs, trimmed, cleaned, gutted and cut in half
    – 1 inch ginger, 1 tsp cumin, 1 garlic clove, 2 shallots all pounded using a mortar and pestle (Spice paste)
    – 1 tomato, sliced
1 tsp curry leaves (or thai basil)
    – 2 tbsp (fish) curry powder mixed with 2 tbsp water
    – 2 tbsp olive oil
    – salt and pepper to taste

    Method:
    – Heat oil in a wok
    – Fry the spice paste and curry leaves for 2 minutes
    – Add in the crabs, followed by the curry paste and tomatoes and mix well. Cook under a low heat for 5 minutes
    – Add 1/2 cup water and leave to simmer for 10 minutes
    – Season with salt and pepper
    – Serve with piping hot steamed rice

  4. What a great idea for a giveaway! It’s hard to come up with my favorite family recipe. Is it a big pot of green beans cooked with potatoes? A decadent sweet potato pecan casserole? Pig that’s been cooked in the backyard over a fire all day? I’ll go with that one, since it’s the easiest to write out:

    1) Place pig on pig cooker
    2) Cook all day long

    🙂

    1. Thank you, I’ve recently been shecraing for information about this subject for a long time and yours is the best I have came upon till now. But, what in regards to the bottom line? Are you positive concerning the source?|What i don’t realize is actually how you are now not really a lot more smartly-favored than you may be right now. You are so intelligent.

  5. oh man, it’s really a tough call… at the moment i’d say my dad’s french toast is the best. it’s not like you get at restaurants — after you batter the bread and griddle it, you coat the whole piece of bread in a cinnamon-sugar mixture. SO DELICIOUS.

  6. My Grandma’s butter cookies totally represent home and comfort, particularly because we make them around the holidays. They are amazing – and unique in that they use salted butter and almond extract.

    Mix thoroughly together:
1 cup soften (SALTED) butter ( 2 sticks)
    1/2c sugar
    1 egg
Stir in 1 tablespoon of almond extract
Sift together 3 cups flour and 1/2 teaspoon baking powder (note: helpful to decrease flour by ½ c. because board and rolling pin will require flour)
Stir in flour mixture into butter mixture until evenly mixed but don’t overwork
Chill dough. Divide into smaller sections if desired
To make cookies: Roll thin (1/8″) and cut into desired shape
Place on ungreased cookie sheet and glaze with a mixture of (1 egg yolk + 2 TBSP water)
Bake until lightly brown on bottom in a 425 degree oven 5-7 min
    ENJOY!

  7. Your CC aprons are the cutest. These are too. And they even have strawberry ones!

    Seafood Linguine
    Serves 6
    Ready in 35 minutes

60-75 raw whole king or tiger prawns, shell on
    Box of linguine
    1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
    2 med shallots, finely chopped
4 cloves of garlic, peeled and grated super-fine
    1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
2 small cans chopped clams, drained
2 small cans minced clams, not drained
    1/4 cup thawed calamari rings
2 filets of White Fish, diced
    A handful of coriander, chopped
    Juice of 1 orange
    Juice of 1/2 lemon
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 handfuls of flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped

Take the head and the shell off the prawns until you reach the tail.

Holding on to each tail, run a small sharp knife along the spine of the prawn until you reach the thin intestinal tube, which is either clear or mud coloured. Remove this tube and set the prawns aside as you do them.

Cook the linguine according to the packet instructions

Drain, splash a tiny bit of olive oil in the pan to prevent sticking, give it a stir and set aside, covered in clingfilm and a clean paper towel to keep it warm.

In a large (and I mean family-sized) saucepan, heat the olive oil and fry the prawns and chorizo for roughly five minutes over a high heat until really golden.

Add the onion, garlic, red pepper, calamari, and the clams to the pan and stir for two minutes until the onion has softened. Add Fish

Finally, add the orange juice and lemon juice and cook, covered with a lid and over a medium heat, for five minutes until the clams are all open.

Taste and season before adding to the pasta and colouring it in with the parsley.

  8. Oh man how creative! That is such a cute/fun idea! Ok I think my favorite family recipe is my Grandma’s cinnamon rolls! They are not at all like what you would buy at the store or a bakery…but they are amazing! My mom always adds homemade chocolate frosting to them too…sooooo yummy!

  9. Yankee Doodle Bake

    2 cups egg noodles (cooked)
    8 hotdogs (sliced and browned)
1/4 cup onion (sauted with hotdogs)
    1 can (10 3/4 oz.) tomato soup
    1/2 can water
    1 tsp. prepared mustard
    1/2 cup bread crumbs

Place cooked egg noodles, hotdgos and onion in a baking dish. Add tomato soup, water and mustard. Cover with bread crumbs.

    Bake 350 for 30 minutes.

  10. I just love reading your site! It is delightful to read of your adventures and see all of your delicious meals/desserts/foods you prepare! 🙂
