The Diagnosis

My self diagnosis was correct. I have an inflamed iliotibial band. So what does that mean, exactly?

Well, IT Band Syndrome is very common among runners, so I’m not alone. From Wikipedia: “The band stretches from the thigh to the calf and is crucial in supporting the knee during running. However, repeated friction and extension of the knee during running may cause inflammation.”

Also — and I’m sure I’m not alone here, either — yesterday’s x-rays showed that my knee caps are set high and inside. Doc says this may cause additional strain while running.

The best remedy for IT Band Syndrome is rest. Easier said than done. On days like today all I want to do is run. It’s refreshing and relaxing, and it had just become part of my daily routine. I miss it.

But I’m trying to stay positive. Even though I won’t be ready to run the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon in Seattle in June, I can still strive to run a half this summer — or perhaps even a full this fall. And Nick and I have already requested time off work in June, so we might as well take advantage of it, right? Destinations currently on the table include San Francisco, Montreal, and London.

So while I continue to stretch and strengthen and roll and ice, please indulge me. Where would you choose to spend five days this summer? And what would you do while you were there?

  1. Way to make lemonade out of lemons, lady! Sorry to hear that Seattle’s not happening this year, but glad that you have such fun other things in mind. All of your ideas sound fantastic, but I think if I lived on the east coast I’d go to Maine and stuff my face with blueberries in the summertime!

  2. Perhaps this is a blessing in disguise encouraging you to grab two tickets to Europe! But the blueberry idea sounds delicious too.

    Rest up, stay strong 🙂

  3. Come here!!! Let me know, when this changes your travel plans for September/October. I only know London from the places you consider and it is of course great. I will be in SanFran at the end of May and can tell you more then… Are you allowed to crosstrain – bike, swim, yoga?

  4. You have a great outlook on the situation! I know you’ll get your marathon in. I’m really bow legged and they think that’s part of the reason mine became inflamed, along with the wrong shoes. But, the last two times I’ve ran I haven’t had any pain so there is hope! Just got to take it slow getting back into it.

As far as vacation goes, I’d say go the fam in London! 🙂

  5. Not happy to hear about your knee, but glad to hear that you are still planning to keep running and that this wont slow you down for too long.

My favorite place IN THE WORLD is Roatan. Its a small island of the coast of Honduras and it really is tropical paradise in every sense of the word. The beaches were the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen with the clearest water and white sand. The people there are so incredibly kind, and there is so much to do. Plus they have an airport and there is a direct flight right out of my Miami. If you ever get the chance, go go go.

  6. Oh, I’m so sorry to hear this!

I would check Kayak.com religiously to see which spot has the cheapest flights. Let the airline Gods give you the signal!

  7. Oh boo, take care of yourself!

I love, love, love San Francisco – that would be my choice. On the other hand, with your brother in England and all… if you happen to have the cash lying around to fly across the pond, that would be an unforgettable trip!

  8. Thank you, ladies, for your encouraging comments and suggestions.

I’m going to try working out on the bike and/or elliptical next week. Not only do I hope it will help my knee, but I need to do cardio again since I’ve continued to eat like I’m still running 20 miles per week!
